997 ArchivesUS government on Monday announced plans for new regulations on AI chips made in America, setting limits on the computational power of chips that US companies can sell to most countries. Sales to 18 key allies and partners will face no restrictions; other countries will be limited to purchasing up to 50,000 AI GPUs between 2025 and 2027. “Data center related GPU products and technologies are widely integrated into the personal computers used by consumers worldwide. Imposing controls on them is pointless and could prompt the global market to seek alternatives, which would undermine US interests,” read a NVIDIA statement in response to the move. Meanwhile, Oracle said that the new regulations could become one of the most destructive policies in the history of the US tech industry, directly cutting US companies’ global chip market share by 80%.
